The health care sector expenditures now constitute over 17% of the U.S. GDP. Individuals, providers of health care and policy makers are concerned about rising costs, quality and access to health care. Are we as a society getting the best value for our dollar? The objective of Eco322 is to help you better understand and critically assess health care issues and the U.S. health care policy from an economist’s perspective. Building on the Eco101 and Eco202 toolkit, we will study economic models of patient behavior, producer behavior and markets in the health care sector. Throughout the class we will also learn about the U.S. health care institutions. The classroom will be an active place -- everyone will be expected to participate in discussions of the assigned readings and current news. At the end of the semester you will get a chance to conduct and present your own independent research project.
